Pre-Conference Fieldtrip
Saturday 28 November 2026, 9am – 5pm
Hongoeka Marae and Pātaka Art + Museum, Porirua
Ticket price: NZD $120 includes 15% Goods and Services Tax (GST)
The field trip offers participants a unique opportunity to engage directly with the living heritage and histories of Ngāti Toa Rangatira and the valued cultural landscapes of Te Awarua o Porirua. Hosted by Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira and Hongoeka Marae Committee, the programme for the day centres on Hongoeka Marae and the Porirua Harbour, foregrounding Māori perspectives on heritage, place, and environmental relationships.
Beginning with a formal pōwhiri at Hongoeka Marae, participants will be welcomed onto the marae and introduced to the histories, narratives, and ongoing kaitiakitanga (guardianship) associated with this place. The visit provides time for shared kōrero (conversations) and kai (morning tea and lunch), grounding the field trip in Māori tikanga. In the afternoon, the programme moves to the Porirua Harbour waterfront and Pātaka Art + Museum, where participants will explore layered heritage stories through site visits and curated exhibitions, including Mutumutu ki Mukukai and Haitautu’uga. Together, these experiences highlight the interconnected cultural, historical, and environmental dimensions of the iwi, harbour and its communities.
Spaces on this field trip are limited to 80 people.
Book during registration.
